AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is about dreaming big and making those dreams a reality. AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in post-secondary institutions. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.
AVID is a program for students who have college dreams but need support in getting there. A typical AVID student is B to C student who tends to perform well on tests and exams but has difficulty organizing themselves to get classroom assignments done on time.
AVID is not:
- A quick fix. It is a progressive program. Students build their skills year after year.
- An "at risk" program.
- A "school within a school". It is an academic elective within the school timetable.
- A homework block. AVID teachers follow a set curriculum.
- For everyone. It targets the student in the academic middle.
It's important to note that AVID is very much like an exercise program. Unless the student uses the skills learned on a consistent basis, the student will not benefit from the program. Simply enrolling into the program will not lead to greater achievement if the student does not utilize the tools and strategies given.
AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. As a result, the AVID Elective teachers and subject area teachers have received training in AVID curriculum and strategies. The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially students in the middle with academic potential capable of completing a post-secondary prepatory path.
