Note: You may use the print materials (books) provided and/or online resources to find your information. Indicate the title and page number if you choose to use a book or encyclopedia. Additional links are provided at the end of this document.

You must do Step 1 (Definitions), Step 3 (Nutrition) and choose at least three other steps (total of 5).  The “final product” comments will be for bonus marks.

Step 1: Definitions

Find out what types of vegetarians there are and what they eat.

  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Lacto-vegetarian
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarian

Find at least 4 common reasons teens (on the Vegetarian Youth Network, for example) give for “going vegetarian”.

 

Step 3: Nutrition

  1. Mark’s mother, and many others, believe that “iron deficiency anemia is the likely outcome of the switch to a vegetarian diet”.

Is this true or is it a myth?

Describe the main symptoms of iron deficiency anemia

Name some foods (3-5) that vegans can eat that contain a reasonable amount of iron.

Find out and explain how a person with low iron can boost their iron absorption.

  1. Is it hard or easy for a vegetarian o meet their protein needs?

How would they do it?

2. What should a vegan do to make sure they get enough Vitamin B12?

3. Scroll down the pictures of the Vegetarian Food Guide Pyramid (http://www.llu.edu/llu/nutrition/vegguide.html#food) and the Vegetarian Food Guide Rainbow (http://www.nutrispeak.com/vegetarian_rainbow.htm) - they both specify the same amounts of servings of the different food groups.

What are the food groups and how many servings of each are suggested?

 

Step 4: Types of foods

 

Go to:

  • Sometimes you can find vegetarian substitutes for animal-based foods. What could a vegan use instead of gelatin, milk and eggs?
  • Find the “glossary” and explain what legumes are and give an example.

 

Step 5: People

  1. Name 5 famous vegetarians you have heard of before.
  2. Find a quotation from a famous vegetarian about their diet choice

offer advice to teenagers about what to be careful of if they go vegetarian.

Write down 4 or more pieces of advice you find in the articles.

 

Recipes and festive menus

  1. For each of the following ingredients, write down the name of a recipe you like the look of:
  • lentil
  • pasta

Go to: Vegetarian Christmas or Vegetarian Society Christmas Recipes or Vegetarian Recipes or any of the vegetarian links below.

  • Find or design a vegetarian festive dinner menu for a special holiday such a Thanksgiving or Christmas and write down the names of the dishes you have chosen.

Using the information you have found in this research to support your ideas. Imagine what you would say to Alison and Mark about vegetarianism to help them resolve their concerns.

Write your ideas in point form at the bottom of your fact sheet and had it in.
